Course Content

This 1½ hour interactive online course assists in teaching faculty practical skills in identifying and responding to students exhibiting behavioral patterns associated with depression, drug and alcohol abuse, aggression, and thoughts of suicide.

Through a series of interactive case studies, exercises, and role-playing simulations, faculty develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to handle situations they may face in real life. Among other things, faculty learn to:

  • Identify potential indicators of mental distress in students
  • Manage conversations with students to determine the need for a referral
  • Properly refer students
  • Recognize their role as faculty, versus the role of counselors
Mental Health Demo

Why Train on This Topic?

According to the 2006 National College Health Assessment, half of all college students report feeling so depressed it is difficult for them to function, and 10% say they have seriously considered suicide in the past year. Students experiencing mental distress tend to exhibit behavioral patterns that are detectable in academic settings. Unfortunately, the majority of these students go unnoticed, leaving themselves and others at risk.

The 2007 National Survey by the American College Counseling Association indicates that the number one action taken by universities to overcome the increasing number of at-risk students is to train faculty to identify and respond to students in need and make appropriate referrals.
This online course will help you:

  • Rapidly train your entire staff of full-time and adjunct faculty
  • Reduce the number of undetected, at-risk students at your campus
  • Reduce faculty anxiety about approaching and dealing with students in distress
