Dear Vanderbilt Faculty and Staff,
Consistent with our institutional mission and community creed, Vanderbilt University is committed to creating a safe and healthy environment for all students, faculty, and staff. A key aspect of exercising that commitment is attending to the mental health needs of our students.
To address these needs, we have adopted At-Risk, an online interactive course that engages learners in simulated practice conversations with virtual, fully animated students who show signs of depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. In this course, you will:
- Learn common indicators of psychological distress
- Practice approaching students
- Practice referring students to the Counseling Center
The training is 45-minutes long and can be completed in multiple sittings. Thank you for your participation.
How to Register for and Access the Course
Step 1:
Go to http://lms.kognito.com and click on "Create New Account." Fill out the online form, choose a username and password, and click on "Create My New Account"
Step 2:
The system will then send you an email to activate your account. Check your inbox for the email and click on the confirmation link to activate the account. The email may end up in your junk mail folder, so please check that folder as well.
Step 3:
Return to http://lms.kognito.com and log in as a Returning User using your username and password.
Step 4:
Click the "At-Risk: Identifying and Referring Students in Mental Distress" link and enter your institution’s enrollment key to enroll in the course. If you don’t have the enrollment key, please use the Enrollment Key Generator to retrieve it.

You only need to use the enrollment key the first time you access the course. The course saves your progress after every completed conversation. You may log out after any conversation and return to the same place. Once you complete the course, you can print a certificate of completion and fill out an online feedback survey. You can also return to the course and re-take any of its parts. At-Risk has been developed by Kognito Interactive (www.kognito.com) in partnership with the Mental Health Association of NYC.
